Artist Talk with Lucia Hierro, Joiri Minaya, & Gina Goico
May 19 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Please join us for an artist talk with Gina Goico, Joiri Minaya, and Lucia Hierro as they discuss their current Resident Artist exhibition, Aquí y Ahora.
Moderated by Lucy Mensah, Assistant Curator of Post-1950 Contemporary Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Joiri Minaya is a Dominican–American artist born in 1990. Living between the United States and the Dominican Republic (and having also lived in Belgium for a while), her work meditates on representation, identity constructions, gender roles, migration, and nature through both a personal lens, as well as larger transcultural and historical frameworks.
Lucia Hierro is a Dominican-American conceptual artist born and raised in Washington Heights, NY, and currently working in the Bronx. She received her BFA from SUNY Purchase in 2010, and MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2013. Her recent work utilizes the tools of Pop Art in order to examine the complex relationships between culture, class, value, and history.
Gina Goico’s work is the result of a constant questioning of her identities, the quotidian, and how she navigates the space where she exists in the Dominican Republic and the United States. Through this process, she has created a diverse body of work ranging from collage to installations, ink drawings, and performance.
This event is free & open to the public of all ages.
The Resident Artist exhibition is on view through Monday, May 28th.
Red Bull House of Art is a live-in residency experience in Detroit, dedicated to providing visual artists the freedom and space to create. Our aim is to support courageous exploration in visual arts.
